In a competition dominated by Mexican squads, Monarcas Morelia is making its Champions League debut, clinching its spot by reaching the Mexican Clausura final, where it lost to 3-2 on aggregate in May. Morelia's international glory includes beating the New England Revolution 2-1, on a pair of Miguel Sabah goals, to claim the 2010 North American SuperLiga title and also competed in the 2010 Copa Libertadores, failing to advance out of the group stage. Owned by TV Azteca, Morelia also twice was runner-up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2002 and 2003. In addition to veteran Sabah, La Monarquia is led by Argentine goalkeeper Federico "El Jefe" Vilar, Mexican international midfielder Jaime Lozano, who along with Joel Huigui and Edgar Lugo, is on loan from Cruz Azul. Coached by Tigres legend Tomas Boy, Morelia plays in the 41,500-seat Estadio Morelos, the seventh-largest stadium in Mexico and one of the sites used for the 2011 U-17 World Cup.
