Formerly known as the Dallas Burn, FC Dallas is making its first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League as a result of reaching the MLS Cup final in November, when it lost to the Colorado Rapids. Schellas Hyndman is the sixth coach in the club's history. He made the move in 2008 after a 24-year career at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He guided the squad to its first ever appearance in the MLS Cup after losing just four regular-season matches. The club is led by Colombian midfielder David Ferreira, who was named MLS MVP last year but suffered a broken ankle against Vancouver April 23 and had surgery on May 5. There was no timetable for his return. Dallas also features goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, who became the first MLS goalkeeper to record 100 shutouts on June 4, and is captained by Daniel Hernandez, who previously played for Necaxa, Puebla and Jaguares de Chiapas in Mexico as well as New England, New York, Tampa Bay and Los Angeles in MLS. Dallas also competed in the 1998 CONCACAF Cup Winners Cup, losing group stage matches to Necaxa and Cruz Azul. Its lone major trophy came in 1997 when it beat DC United to win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
