Alianza FC is making its first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League, but has the distinction of being the first team from Central American to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup, in 1967. Atletico La Constancia was formed in 1958 by local industry workers. Two years later the club reached the first division and changed the name to Alianza FC in honor of Alianza Lima, one of the most popular clubs in Peru. Six years later, "Los Albos" defeated Brazilian side Santos FC, featuring Pele, one of the greatest achievements in Alianza's history. Coached by Argentine Roberto Gamarra, who replaced Milos Miljanic after he resigned in March, Alianza claimed its first league title in seven years by winning the Clausura title with two goals by Rodolfo Zelaya in a 2-1 win against FAS. The Salvadoran international led the league in scoring last year with 13 goals. Along with Cristian Castillo, Zelaya is on loan from Mexican squad Club Leon. Jimmy Cuellar and Joel Ely Serrano are two of the new players from Atletico Balboa. After playing in Estadio Nacional de la Flor Blanca for its entire existence, Alianza moved to the 45,000-seat Estadio Cuscatlan following the 2001 earthquakes that killed nearly 1,000.
