Real Salt Lake is making its first Champions League appearance after capturing MLS Cup in November, defeating David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy in a penalty-kick shootout in front of 46,011 fans at Qwest Field in Seattle. RSL is coached by Jason Kreis, who also was the first player signed by the club and was one of the all-time leading scorers in Major League Soccer history before retiring in 2007. He is the second coach in club history, following John Ellinger, who coached Real Salt Lake from 2005-2007. The team includes U.S. internationals Kyle Beckerman and Robbie Findley, as well as Canadian international Will Johnson and Argentines Fabian Espindola and Javier Morales. After initially playing at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium, Real Salt Lake moved into Rio Tinto Stadium, a 20,008 capacity soccer-specific stadium in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy in October 2008 after four years of delays. The stadium hosted the MLS All-Star Game vs. English Premier League side Everton on July 29, 2009, and was the site of a U.S. World Cup qualifier against El Salvador on September 5, 2009. The club is owned by Dave Checketts, the former president and chief executive of the New York City entertainment company Madison Square Garden.
