Founded in 1929, Real Espana and is one of Honduras' most successful teams. It's designation as "Real" (or royal) was bestowed on the club by King Juan Carlos I of Spain in 1977 - the only club outside of Spain to be granted the title by the Spanish monarchy. The "Aurinegros", meaning black and gold, are followed by the nation's most famous supporters club the "Mega Locos". Carlos Pavon is the team's career scoring leader with 53 goals, but he signed with Necaxa of the Mexican Primera Division in March 2009 after his fourth spell with the club where he had his professional start in 1992. Real Espana's roster boasts Honduran internationals Melvin Valladares and Allan Lalin and Brazilian striker Edmilson da Silva. Real finished runner-up in both this past season's Apertura and Clausura championship matches, falling to Marathon 2-1 in December's league final and then dropping a 4-3 decision to Olimpia in the recently completed Clausura championship match.
