Pumas are making their third appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League. In the inaugural tournament, they were undefeated in Group B before losing in the quarterfinals to Mexican rival Cruz Azul. The following year, they claimed Group D and defeated Arabe Unido in the quarters before again losing to La Maquina again, this time 5-1 in the semifinals. Pumas' has won seven of 12 Group Stage matches in two previous Champions League appearances with only one loss. One of Mexico's most popular teams, Pumas is known for its youth development, which has produced such stars as Enrique Borja, Hugo Sanchez, Claudio Suarez, Jorge Campos and Gerardo Torrado. Pumas earned its berth in this year's tournament by winning the Mexican Clausura, defeating Monarcas Morelia in the final. Its main rival is fellow Mexico City club America, a rivalry that dates back to the 1960s. Pumas play in Estadio Olimpico Universitario, a 62,700-seat stadium on National Autonomous University of main campus in Mexico City.
