The most successful Caribbean team in the CONCACAF Champions League, Puerto Rico will compete in its fifth consecutive tournament after finishing third in the CFU club championship. The Islanders are one of three teams, joining Isidro Metapan from El Salvador and Olimpia of Honduras, to qualify for each Champions League since its inception in 2008. In the inaugural Champions League season, Puerto Rico reached the semifinals before losing on penalties to Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul. It upset Alajuelense in the Preliminary Round, beat Mexico's Santos en route to reaching the quarterfinals, and then beat Honduran giant Marathon to reach the final four. In 2010-11, Puerto Rico upset the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Preliminary Round, the second straight year it defeated a Major League Soccer squad. The Islanders had unparalleled success under Northern Irishman Colin Clarke, who took over in May 2007. But Clarke left after the 2011 season to coach the Carolina RailHawks and was replaced by assistant Adrian Whitebread, who previously was an assistant at Barnet, Brentford, MK Dons and Leicester City in his native England. The Islanders are led by Jamaican forward Nicholas Addlery, as well as Dominican Republic forward Jonathan Fana and English goalkeeper Richard Martin. Puerto Rico plays at 12,500-seat Juan Ramon Loubriel, originally built as a baseball stadium in 1974.
