The most successful Caribbean team in the CONCACAF Champions League, Puerto Rico will compete in its third consecutive tournament after capturing its first CFU club championship. In the inaugural Champions League tournament, the Islanders made a stunning run to the semifinals before bowing out on penalties to Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul. It was nothing short of remarkable, considering Puerto Rico had to beat San Juan Jabloteh and LD Alajuelense just to qualify. Needing a draw to get through to the knockout stage, Puerto Rico drew Tauro FC 2-2 on the last day of the group stage and then beat Honduran giants CD Marathon to reach the final four. Last year, after beating Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, the Islanders couldn't get out of the group stage. The Islanders have had five managers in six years, but have had unparalleled success under Northern Irishman Colin Clarke, who took over in May 2007. The Islanders play on the second tier of North American soccer, currently called the USSF Division 2 Pro League. In each of the last three years, Puerto Rico has reached the semifinals, and in 2008, lost to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final. Led by American goalkeeper Bill Gaudette and Jamaican forward Nicholas Addlery, the Islanders play at 12,500-seat Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon.
