The most successful Caribbean team in the CONCACAF Champions League, Puerto Rico will compete in its fourth consecutive tournament after capturing its second straight Caribbean club title. In the inaugural Champions League tournament, the Islanders reached the semifinals before losing on penalties to Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul. They defeated San Juan Jabloteh and Alajuelense just to qualify, drew 2-2 draw with Tauro FC in Panama City in its last Group Stage match and then beat Honduran giant Marathon to reach the final four. Last year, the Islanders defeated a Major League Soccer squad for a second consecutive year, upsetting the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Preliminary Round, but lost out to Olimpia and Toluca in the Group Stage. The Islanders have had five managers in seven years, but have had unparalleled success under Northern Irishman Colin Clarke, who took over in May 2007. The Islanders play in the North American Soccer League, the second tier of North American soccer, and after three consecutive semifinal appearances, won the USSF Division 2 Pro League last year. While goalkeeper Bill Gaudette is now with the Montreal Impact, Puerto Rico is led by Jamaican forward Nicholas Addlery and play at 12,500-seat Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon.
