Originally known as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, the club is one of nine surviving charter members of Major League Soccer. While having attracted internationally renowned players such as Lothar Mattaeus, Roberto Donadoni and Youri Djorkaeff, and coaches such as Carlos Alberto Parreira, Bora Milutinovic and Bruce Arena, the team's history has been marked by constant change. Started by MetroMedia Company principals John Kluge and Stuart Subotnick, the MetroStars were sold to Austrian energy drink maker Red Bull in 2006 and the team was renamed. The club has played since its inception at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, used as a venue for the 1994 World Cup and two Gold Cup finals, but will move into its own stadium, Red Bull Arena, in 2010.
