Making its third CONCACAF Champions League appearance, Municipal is the definition of success in Guatemalan football. No club has won more league titles (28), the Rojos are also the lone Guatemalan squad to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1974 and finished as runners-up in the Copa Interamericana in 1974, the best finish by a Guatemalan club. Since the Guatemalan league switched to the Apertura/Clausura format in 2000, Municipal, which plays at Estadio Mateo Flores - a 30,000-seat stadium in Guatemala City, has won 13 of the 24 titles. Coached by Uruguayan Manuel Keosseian, who previously coached Honduran squad Marathon in the Champions League, Municipal finished third in Group C last year with eight points from three matches, failing to advance to the knockout stage. Municipal features Panamanian national team goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.
