Not just the most decorated club in Costa Rica, Deportivo Saprissa is also one of the most successful clubs in the entire CONCACAF region. El Monstruo Morado (the Purple Monster) has won a record 29 Primera Division de Costa Rica titles and captured the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the predecessor to the Champions League, three times and have five Central American crowns. One of the greatest moments in club history came in 2005 when Saprissa became the first non-Mexican squad from CONCACAF to play in the FIFA Club World Cup. Saprissa finished third, equaling Mexico's Necaxa for the best finish in the competition by a CONCACAF squad. Saprissa plays at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, a 23,112-seat fortress known as La Cueva del Monstruo (the Monster's Cave) and has become a favorite for the Costa Rican national team. Roy Myers, who has been capped 45 times and played in the 1990 World Cup for Costa Rica, is the manager. Former Costa Rican international defender Victor Cordero, who has been with Saprissa for 18 seasons, is the captain.
