The most famous and successful team in the history of Honduran football, the "Lions" have won the Liga Nacional title 22 times and are currently the reigning champions. Despite losing midfielder Hendry Thomas to English Premiership club Wigan Athletic in June, Olimpia still will have the services of the Honduran league's career scoring leader, Wilmer Velasquez, who has 185 goals in nine seasons. Also forming the core of the team is goalkeeper Noel Valladares and defensive midfield standout Danilo Turcios. The club was originally founded as a baseball club but added soccer to its programs in 1917. Its first major success on the international stage came in 1959 when it defeated Liga Deportivo Alajuelense of Costa Rica to become champion of Central America and Mexico. Olimpia also remain the only Central American team to ever defeat a Mexican side in Estadio Azteca when it defeated Cruz Azul in 1988.
