CD Marathon, the second-most popular club team in Honduras, is set to make its third appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League. In the 2008-09 tournament, Marathon topped its group, but was upset by the Puerto Rico Islanders in the quarterfinals 3-1. Last year, Nicolas Suazo's squad finished second in Group B and was ousted by Mexican side Pumas UNAM 6-3 on aggregate in the knockout stage. Founded by Eloy Montes and a group of friends in 1925, Marathon has become one of Honduras' most successful clubs and immediately formed a rivalry with Olimpia, which continues to be intense today. Marathon plays its matches at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano, a 40,000-seat stadium in San Pedro Sula which also doubles as the preferred home of the Honduran national team. El Monstruo Verde (the Green Monster), the only Honduran team to beat Argentine great River Plate, has won eight Liga National de Futbol Honduras titles and finished second 11 times, often to rival Olimpia. Forward Walter Martinez played for Honduras in the 2010 World Cup and Marathon is also led by defender Erick Norales, who converted the final penalty kick to book Honduras' spot in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
