BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - Isidro Metapan lost 3-1 to the Puerto Rico Islanders on Wednesday but still prevailed away goals to earn a place in the Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League for the second time.
David Foley converted two penalties and Nick Addlery added a finale in the fifth minute of second-half injury time for Puerto Rico, but Lester Blanco's 56th-minute tally was enough to earn a 3-3 aggregate draw and return the Salvadoran side to the league phase for the first time since 2009.
Metapan will join the Colorado Rapids, Real Espana of Honduras and either Olimpia of Honduras or Mexico's Santos Laguna in Group C, beginning at Colorado on August 17.
The result denied Puerto Rico its attempt to become the only team to reach the Group Stage for a fourth straight year.
Twenty-four hours of rain from Tropical Storm Emily finally relented about noon Tuesday, but left the field at Estadio Roman Loubriel saturated. Grounds crews was able to roll most of the standing water out of the corners, but puddles were still noticeable near the bench touchlines.
Neither side was able to generate much offense on a surface that was slick and slippery in spots, and heavy and spongy in others.
Puerto Rico had the better of play throughout the first half, but rarely looked particularly dangerous.
Metapan had the best chance of the first 45 minutes when Alfredo Pacheco's free kick from 25 meters had to be punched away by Islanders' keeper Ray Burse.
Blanco put Metapan ahead, running onto a rather innocuous looking ball at the top the area, but with no Puerto Rico defender close was able to find time and space to launch a left-footed drive across the goal and past a diving Burse.
Puerto Rico equalized four minutes later when Pacheco was called for knocking down an unidentifiable defender on the goal line during a corner kick, and Foley converted the ensuing penalty.
Foley scored a second penalty in the 69th, creating the chance when his cross struck the trailing arm of Pacheco in the area.
With Puerto Rico needing two goals to negate Blanco's away-goal advantage, the Islanders continued to push forward and Addlery sent a ball across the face of goal that appeared to deflect in off Gregory Richardson but actually struck the left post and went in.
Despite advancing, Metapan has yet to win away from home in the Champions League, losing all six games. Blanco's goal was only the second in those six games and ended a four-game goalless streak.
