MORELIA, Mexico - Morelia scored four times in 13 minutes midway through the second half and routed Tempete FC 5-0 Thursday night to take a dominant advantage in the first leg of its CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round series.

Miguel Sabah earned a penalty and then converted to spark the barrage in the 63rd, and Joao Rojas, Angel Sepulveda and Jaime Lozano all added goals in quick succession to break open a game in which Morelia had dominated but was repeatedly frustrated by goalkeeper Guerry Romondt and its own inability to finish.

Morelia also will host the second leg of the Preliminary Round series on Wednesday. The Mexican side is staging both matches due to Haiti's Stade Sylvio Cator not having completed renovations necessitated by last year's earthquake.

The match marked the debut for both teams in the Champions League and Morelia's first appearance in the CONCACAF club championship since 2003.

Morelia, which used seven of its starters from Saturday's 2-1 victory in the opening weekend of the Mexican Apertura, was dominant from the start, with Romondt thwarting Rojas with the ball at his feet on the edge of the six-yard box in the third minute.

Tempete earned a corner in fourth minute, but wouldn't get possession in Morelia half again until the 25th. The Haitain side would manage seven corners in the first half, but its shots were relegated to an effort from the midfield line that went over the bar in the 17th minute and Vaniel Sirin's one-bounce try from 25 meters that was easily handled by Morelia keeper Federico Vilar.

Morelia went ahead in the 15th when Joel Adrian Huiqui rose unmarked to head in Rojas' corner kick, but it would struggle to find a second goal until the second half.

After Edgar Lugo volleyed cross from the edge of the six high in the sixth minute, Miguel Angel Sansores was thwarted on his diving header by Romondt in 14th and Rojas put a right-footed off the far post in the 22nd.

But Sabah spurred Morelia by getting into the area only to be tripped by Romondt. Rojas added his in the 67th, settling Sansores high cross with one touch inside the area and finding time and space to put a right-footed shot inside the far post.

Sepulveda, who entered the game less than half a minute earlier for Huiqui, hiked the lead to 4-0 in the 70th by heading Rojas' cross from eight meters and Lozano tacked on the finale in the 76th, getting struck with a ball Romondt had deflected with his hand off the 31-year-old defender's shoulder.

The game marked the debut of Peruvian Danilo Barriga as coach of Tempete, having recently replaced Carl Eric Cadet.
