SEATTLE - Neri Cardozo scored one goal and set up another to pace Monterrey to a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday and guarantees it at least a share of the Group C lead after two rounds of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Cardozo gave Monterrey the lead in the 41st with a touch header and then chipped a ball behind the defense for Aldo De Negris in the 58th to give Monterrey six points and hand the Sounders their second loss.

Seattle hit the post and were frustrated on several chances in front of its home crowd by a Monterrey side which made five changes from the starting lineup that drew 2-2 with Pachuca on Saturday in its Mexican league encounter.

A fairly even first half turned Monterrey's way when Jesus Eduardo Zavala got down the right side and sent a cross that Leo Gonzalez was able to get a foot to and change the spin on the ball. It bounced once and Cardozo raced behind defender Jeff Parke to nod over goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who had come off his line.

The Sounders had a chance to equalize two minutes into the second half when Sanna Nyassi spinted past Monterrey's Sergio Perez on the right to get to Fredy Montero's through ball, driving to just outside the six-yard box before flicking a shot with his right foot off the near post.

Monterrey capitalized on the mizzed chance 11 minutes later when Cardozo chipped a ball and De Negris was left unmarked, walking to the just outside of the six-yard box with enough time to settle and drive a shot past Keller.

It was the fourth straight game with a goal by De Negris, including both Champions League group matches.

Seattle continued to press forward and had the better of possession for much of the second half, creating its best chance in the 76th when Montero's right-footed blast from distanced forced Monterrey keeper Jonathan Orozco to dive to his left to punch the ball away.

Orozco knocked away another shot by Montero in the 86th and Nate Jaqua had a goal disallowed in the 89th minute for offside.

The result extended Monterrey's unbeaten start to its season to seven games while it left Seattle with only one victory in its last five matches.

Seattle will travel to Costa Rica to face Saprissa on September 14 when the Champions League resumes in three weeks while Monterrey will be home against Marathon earlier the same day.
