SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras - Real Espana ended a three-game losing streak in the CONCACAF Champions League, scoring a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes and beating Comunicaciones 2-0 Wednesday night to maintain its chances of reaching the quarterfinals.
Comunicaciones' inability to clear the ball led to an own-goal by Fredy Thompson in the ninth minute and Carlos Pavon added his fourth of the tournament and first since the Preliminary Round to give Espana six points and a share of second place in Group D with Comunicaciones.
Pumas clinched the group title and earned its quarterfinal berth earlier Wednesday night, beating W Connection 2-1 in Mexico City. The last berth will go down to the final round of the group phase, when Real Espana will travel to Trinidad to play W Connection while Comunicaciones will be home against Pumas.
Real Espana had the better of play early and a relentless push forward paid off when Jairo Puerto sent a corner kick and two subsequent crosses into the area. He settled stepped inside a ball-watching Transito Montepeque to volley the third attempted clearance, and sent it bounding across the face of the goal toward Caetano Mattoso at the back post.
But Thompson was racing back and inadvertently knocked the ball in with his shin in an attempt to block the pass.
Another defensive lapse enabled Pavon to double the lead in the 15th minute. Caetano's cross from the right tipped off the head of one defender, and Rigoberto Cotto - who was in position to head the ball away, fell, allowing Pavon to have time and space to settle and finish easily from the middle of the area.
The rest of the first half was much more even, but Espana resumed its control at the beginning of the second half. Rolando Fonseca had Comunicaciones' best chances, but the Guatemalan side's hopes all but evaporated when defender Edwin Enqriquez received two yellow cards in five minutes and was ejected in the 75th after pulling down Pavon by the shoulder as he neared the penalty area.
Espana hadn't won in the Champions League since beating W Connection at home on August 20. Since then, it had lost three games by a combined score of 11-1.
