LA CHORRERA, Panama—Victor Mendieta scored in the first half and Arabe Unido held on to defeat Honduran powerhouse CD Olimpia 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.
The Panamanian squad, which lost to the 22-time Honduran league champion 2-1 a week ago in Honduras, advanced with a 1-0 advantage on away goals.
Arabe Unido, making its first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League, will host Mexican squad Pachuca on August 15.
Pachuca easily advanced to the Group Stage after defeating Jalapa of Guatemala 10-1 on aggregate.
Orlando Rodriguez had an opportunity to put Arabe Unido ahead in the 16th minute, but his shot from inside the penalty area sailed left of the near post.
The Panamanians finally broke the game open in the 28th minute when Victor Mendieta headed in a cross by Jose Justavino.
Rodriguez, who joined the team last year, had a chance to double its lead in the 40th minute, but his header sailed over the crossbar.
The defense of Arabe Unido shut down Olimpia all night. The Hondurans, who didn't make it out of the Group Stage in last year's Champions League, played a mostly defensive first half and could not get anything going in the second.
Edwin Yobani of Olimpia was sent off in the second minute of injury time after receiving his second yellow of the night.
